Book of the Dead (pt. 2)
THE CHAPTERS OF COMING FORTH BY DAY
Summary: hymns to be recited for "coming forth", for entering Khert-Neter, and in Amentet; they're supposed to be recited on the funeral day, "entering in after coming forth"
...AND OF OPENING UP A WAY THROUGH THE AMEHET
"I have become a spirit in my forms, I have gotten the mastery over my words of magical power, and I am adjudged a spirit...I know you, and I know your names, and I know also the name of the mighty god before whose face ye set your celestial food. His name is "Tekem." [When] he openeth up his path on the eastern horizon of heaven, [when] he alighteth towards the western horizon of heaven, may he carry me along with him, and may I be safe and sound. Let not the Mesqet make an end of me, let not the Fiend (Sebau) gain the mastery over me, let me not be driven away from the doors of the Other World... grant unto me the power to float down and to sail up the stream in the Field of Reeds (Sekhet-Aaru), [and may I reach Sekhet-hetepet (the Field of Offerings)]."
Summary: Become a "spirit", say magic words (hymns),
name the gods name the head god. Tekem will open a path on the eastern horizon to go west (the path of the sun?). Ask for protection and be allowed in. Ask for power to float/sail up some stream to the Field of Offerings.
This section (after riding with Tekem and before the Arits) relates to the Weighing of Hearts rite
THE NAMES OF THE GODS OF THE GREAT COMPANY:- 1. Ra Harmakhis, the Great God in his boat. 2. Temu. 3. Shu. 4. Tefnut. 5. Keb. 6. Nut, the Lady of Heaven. 7. Isis. 8. Nephthys. 9. Horus, the Great God. 10. Hathor, Lady of Amentet. 11. Hu. 12. Sa.
Next section, summary: After passing Tem, he asks "Who is this" 12 times and other assorted identifying questions.
Seven Arits: to pass each door, a passage needs to be recited. (These are all male guards.)
21 Pylons: ditto, with female guards.
After 21st pylon: More hails to priests and judges (Tchatcha Chiefs)
A spell must be cast so that one remembers his own name. One's heart (ka?) must be brought to Khert-nefer and kept from being driven out or snatched away. Spells need to be recited in order to breathe and drink water (w/o being burned). Spells to prevent rotting or dying a second death. Spells against being transported back to the east. Spells of mobility and making a way to Tuat. Spells against beheading. Multiple versions of all spells.
SOLAR LITANY - homage to various deities
Transform into lots of things for no apparent reason.
NEGATIVE CONFESSION - Haven't we done this before?
ADDRESS TO THE GODS OF THE TUAT (this is after coming forth from the Halls of Maati)
The gods then address the supplicant (who apparently has become deified by now)
CHAPTERS OF SEKHET-HETEPET... ENTERING INTO AND COMING FORTH FROM KHERT-NETER, OF ARRIVING IN SEKHET-AANRU, AND OF LIVING IN PEACE IN THE GREAT CITY...OF HAVING POWER THEREIN; OF BECOMING A SPIRIT-SOUL THERE...[Of doing regular stuff there]
"I paddle this great boat over the Lake of the god Hetep; I seized upon it in the mansion of Shu..."
Apparently, once you get to town, you can do all the usual stuff in life. Farming, having sex, etc.
More addresses to various deities
...THE FOUR LIGHTED LAMPS WHICH ARE MADE FOR THE SPIRIT- SOUL
"Behold, thou shalt make four rectangular troughs of clay wherein thou shalt scatter incense, and thou shalt fill them with the milk of a white cow, and by means of these thou shalt extinguish the lamps." Then cast the spell.
