HL Fic Recs
Anything rated B and above I would recommend for HL or Connor fans. Anything rated A I'd recommend even to non-HL fans.
Immortal Encounters with the Kurgan, by Jan the Man
Very short. Two somewhat disjointed snippets with the Kurgan and two other major characters in the HL-verse (not Connor).
Delusions of Grandeur, by Jean
Very short. Methos' rather flippant explanation for the end of HL1. Not very in character. I think it's supposed to be a humor piece, except it's only amusing, not *that* funny.
Twelve Days in February, by Sue Kelly
Long; angsty. Duncan, Tessa, and Richie has a bit of a problem with a stalker. Or is that stalkers? Or is stalking even the real danger? I like the way the plot keeps twisting to maintain the mystery of what really is going on and who the real villain(ess) is. There's also a Connor cameo, though I think poor Connor is a bit OOC. Really, the fact that Duncan even called up Connor for help is a tad OOC, if you ask me. We've seen 7 seasons/years worth of Duncan dealing with some really bad stuff without resorting to call his elder.
Family Secrets, by Sue Kelly
Longish. Richie-centric. Something of a Sue-fic, actally, with one of those Sues that you just wanna slap around. The only part I really paid any attention to was near the end, when Connor gets a cameo, and the even shorter Methos cameo. Methos was OOC though. Um, yeah, that's all I have to say about it.
Set of the Sail, by lynnann
Long; romance. Unlike the previous, this is a *good* Sue-fic. And boy oh boy would I love to be in that Sue's shoes. *eg* Some nice info about sea navigation in there. The author apparently did her research. It's also nice to see that part of Connor's canon history being explored. Oh, and I *loved* the kitty cat. Interestingly, the fic didn't deal with the issue of Immortality at all. It's all romance, really. Hope there's gonna be a sequel.
No Change of Heart, by lynnann
Short piece taking place when Ramirez was still teaching Connor. Basically, our Highlander and his wife deal with the fact that there won't be any kids, as overheard by our dear Spanish peacock. Pretty good.
Mourning Morning, by MacNair
Short angsty piece rewriting the aftermath of that travesty known as HL4:Endgame. Connor's alive, and that alone gives it brownie points. I thought it did a nice job characterizing the depth of the relationship between the two Highlanders.
Hammer and Anvil, by MacNair
Fairly short. Another rewrite of the ending to HL4. This time, it's Methos who takes a stab at preventing that utter travesty that movie called an ending.
Gifts from the Street, by MacNair
Fairly short, NC-17 het. I don't think this qualifies as a Mary Sue, since the character is basically a one-time throwaway character. An OFC, maybe, since she is the only other main character in the fic besides Connor. Um, as the author admits at the end of the fic, it was basically an exercise at exploring Connor's, er, "bedside manner". Um, yeah. *blushes*
Rating: A- (for the sex, baby! ^_-)
All in Green Went My Love Riding, by MacNair
Very long. Romance. Basically, this covers the period between when Connor is banished from his clan to after he marries Heather but before meeting Ramirez. It's the slow course of Connor meeting, befriending, falling in love with, and marrying Heather. Or, to be more accurate, it's the story of Heather meeting, befriending, etc. our favorite Highland Immortal. A very sweet romance with it's fair share of plot, and a very heavy dose of characterization. Even the supporting characters are well written.
To Hold the Lightning, by MacNair
Long. Connor recounts a tale of his past to his younger kinsman - something about being mistaken for a god? Not humor though; it alternates between angst and... um... drama? Connor is quite a bit OOC in the flashback scenes. Personally, I think this was written after someone saw Mortal Kombat one too many times. Raiden the god of lightning played by Christopher Lambert, anyone? It's pretty obvious from the pictures strewn through the fic. Heh. Connor with white hair. Now *that* story I wanna hear.
My Brother's Keeper, by MacNair
Long, angsty. Duncan's still kinda nutso after the whole Dark Quickening mess. Connor drops by, not much better himself. Words are exchanged that can't be taken back, but some bonds will weather the worst of storms. Rather OOC for everyone involved, including several Methos appearances. But a good read for an angst-fic, I guess.
Passing Through the Fire, by MacNair
Fairly short, angsty. Someone's playing mind games with Duncan. Connor gets dragged in, naturally.
Up Near the Treeline, by MacNair
Long, angsty. Connor helps Duncan get through his mourning of Tessa's death during Christmas. Involves quite a bit of heart to heart conversations, no matter how both men dislikes that kinda thing. I rather like how the interactions are done.
Paradise, by Sandra McDonald
Very long, angsty. AU from the Ahriman arc in the TV series, where Richie didn't die, but only came through with more emotional/psychological scars. Connor drops by after the altered events of that arc and drags Richie off somewhere to heal.
Sometimes, by Sandra McDonald
Fairly short, angsty. Duncan is... depressed? Connor ends up (help) teaching Richie. Eh.
Delusions of Grandeur, by Sandra McDonald
Long, two parts, angsty. Sequel to "Sometimes". A more twisted explanation of the ending to HL1. Poor Connor. Very OOC characterization of him though.
